  • The downtown master plan needs updating for a 10-year extension from Pinellas County.

  • Public involvement will be key, with community surveys and workshops planned.

Tarpon Springs' New Branding Initiative

Tarpon Springs is set to launch a comprehensive branding campaign aimed at enhancing its presence on social media and in tourist areas. On January 7, the city commissioners, acting as the Community Redevelopment Agency, unanimously approved a request for proposal to develop a city branding program.

City Manager Charles Rudd emphasized the campaign's goal: to establish a distinctive identity and market position for Tarpon Springs and its downtown area. This strategy is designed to resonate with local and regional residents, businesses, and visitors.

Marketing Plan Components

The branding plan will encompass:

  • A branding platform for downtown Tarpon Springs, including a tagline, brand statement, colors, fonts, and logo treatments.
  • Design elements for marketing, such as advertisements, brochures, banners, a promotional tourism video, social media content strategy, and wayfinding signs.

Financial Commitment

The city has allocated $127,000, funded through the Community Redevelopment Agency, for a marketing analysis by Inspire Placemaking Collective. This analysis will assess:

  • A CRA economic analysis
  • Parking garage/parking lot assessment
  • Evaluation of public-private partnerships

Downtown Master Plan Update

Originally completed in 2001, the downtown master plan serves as a guide for the city's CRA. The CRA district, along with its Tax Increment Financing status, is set to expire in 2031, prompting the city to seek a 10-year extension from Pinellas County. An updated master plan is necessary for this extension.

Future Developments

  • The city is considering the inclusion of a boutique hotel in the area, as suggested by Mayor Panagiotis Koulias.
  • An analysis for increasing the floor-to-area ratio and allowing four-story buildings is also proposed to spur economic development.
  • Public involvement will be integral, featuring community polls, surveys, and workshops to gather input and foster public-private partnerships.

City Manager Rudd highlighted the importance of creating a vision and plan that aligns with existing codes to facilitate these developments.
