The National Mental Health Consumer Alliance (NMHCA) is the national peak body for mental health consumers, led by and for people with lived experience of mental health challenges. It works collaboratively across Australia to influence systems, policy and practice, ensuring the consumer voice is heard where it matters most. The National Communications Lead is a pivotal role for an experienced, values‑driven communications professional who is equally comfortable delivering hands‑on communications and thinking strategically. About The Role Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, the National Communications Lead is responsible for shaping and delivering NMHCA’s communications, media and digital presence nationwide. This position will support the CEO with speeches and key messaging, be the first point of contact for media, develop and implement a data‑driven communications strategy, and manage online platforms. As a small organisation, NMHCA is looking for a true all‑rounder — someone who enjoys variety, autonomy and collaboration. This role does not include fundraising. This role may be undertaken at 0.6 FTE to 1.0 FTE, across 5 days a week. About You You are a skilled communications professional who brings both technical expertise and lived experience to your work. You are values‑led, flexible, collaborative and organised, with the ability to manage competing priorities and respond to emerging issues. You Will Also Bring
- Excellent written communication skills, including speechwriting
- Experience managing websites (e.g. WordPress), newsletters (e.g. Mailchimp) and social media
- A strong understanding of branding in a nonprofit or social justice context
- Demonstrated success in achieving positive media coverage
- A data‑driven approach to communications and marketing
- Confidence working with diverse stakeholders, including journalists and consumer representatives
Key responsibilities
- Develop and implement a data‑driven national communications and marketing strategy which positions NMHCA as a trusted and credible national consumer peak body
- Write impactful speeches for the CEO for conferences and events
- Lead NMHCA’s public communications across website, email newsletters, the Annual Report, webinars and social media
- Implement new branding guidelines across the organisation
- Design and deliver digital and visual content using tools such as Canva
- Maintain and optimise the NMHCA website, SEO and Google AdWords
- Act as the first point of contact for journalists, drafting media releases and proactively pitching stories
- Facilitate a national communications network with member organisations

- Relevant tertiary qualifications in communications, marketing, public relations or a related discipline, or equivalent experience
- National Police Certificate
- Working with Children Check (or state/territory equivalent)
