When a Customer Becomes an Employee: The Unexpected Staples Encounter That Went Viral

Be real, what would you do if a worker asked you to essentially clock in with them? This woman's reaction might surprise you.

The Printing Dilemma
Fewer and fewer people have a printer at home, and a 2019 survey found that the printer industry is declining at a rate of 1.5 to 2.5 percent a year. Toner Buzz reported on this trend. With these kinds of stats, it’s no wonder that when people do have printing needs, they end up piling up at places like Staples Print and Marketing Services, sometimes leaving the workers overwhelmed with the sheer amount of customers and order requests to fulfill.

Customer Asked to Clock In
In a viral video with more than 450,000 views, TikToker Tenille (@prettybullyinthestreet) shared her unexpected experience at Staples. She went to print invitations for her son’s birthday party and found herself unexpectedly helping a worker in distress. "My life is not real," Tenille remarked as she described the situation.

When it was her turn, she was surprised when the worker asked her, "Just come back here." Tenille committed to the bit and went behind the counter, even handling customer questions despite not always knowing the answers. "The line was HUGE & people were getting so mad so I tried to help lol," she noted in her video.

Once the line went down, the worker, whom Tenille called "really sweet," was able to assist her with her invitations. Tenille expressed her gratitude, thanking the worker multiple times off-camera.

The Ask Was Actually Kinda Sweet?
While not everyone may interpret it this way, several commenters pointed out that the worker was likely feeling overwhelmed, and Tenille’s presence might have provided some much-needed support. Comments ranged from acknowledging that the worker chose Tenille as a safe person to recognizing the anxiety that can come with retail work.

In a culture that often leans towards negativity, Tenille’s comment section was surprisingly supportive and understanding, showcasing a rare moment of kindness amidst the chaos of retail.
