Unveiling Ralph Cohen: The Media Icon of Madison's Vibrant Scene

A Journey Through Madison's Media Landscape

When I heard Ralph Cohen was retiring after nearly 50 years in the Madison media scene, I knew I had to talk to him. This media legend is brimming with stories that could fill a book.

Memorable Moments

From receiving a baby alligator in the mail to delivering pizzas to moving freight trains, Cohen's life is filled with unforgettable anecdotes. One standout moment was when he helped give away a new house on Z104, leading to a heartfelt wedding invitation a year later.

From On-Air to Behind the Scenes

Cohen spent 25 years in sales and marketing for WISC-TV and its affiliates, including Madison Magazine. He remained a visible figure in the community, participating in various organizations and even playing on a local softball team.

The Alligator Incident

His first writing experience came after an unusual gift: a baby alligator. This led him to write and illustrate a book titled, “The Alligator Bit Me.”

Career Beginnings

Cohen’s love for sports and writing began early. He wrote for the student paper at Purdue University and volunteered at the campus radio station, eventually leading him to a career in radio.

Radio Stardom

After arriving in Madison in 1979, he quickly made a name for himself in news and promotions at WTSO-AM and Z104. His innovative promotions, including a contest involving a $500 bill, even caught the attention of the Secret Service!

Transition to Sales and Marketing

In 1991, Cohen transitioned to a new station, 105.5-Triple M, where he became part of the first morning team and later the sales manager. His creativity shone through even in sales, as he once landed an account by presenting a cake with a clever tagline.

A New Chapter

At 72, Cohen reflects on his career with satisfaction. His last day at WISC-TV was January 24, and while he enjoyed his work, he felt it was time for a break. Looking ahead, he plans to travel and engage in volunteer work to give back to the community.

In the 2024 Milwaukee Press Club's Excellence in Journalism Awards, "Doug Moe’s Madison" won Bronze in the "Best Online Exclusive Column" category.
