Unprecedented Black Friday Sales: How Discounts and Marketing Strategies Fueled Record Growth
Record Business This Black Friday Weekend
This year's Black Friday weekend sales achieved remarkable results, largely thanks to heavy discounts and effective marketing efforts. Retailers and brands reported sales reaching 70-80% of what they typically see during major shopping periods like Republic Day and Independence Day.
Retailers Liquidating Stock
Devarajan Iyer, CEO of Lifestyle International, shared that their Black Friday sales were successful, allowing the company to liquidate much of its unsold festive season stock. He noted a double-digit year-on-year sales growth in most regions, except for areas affected by a cyclone, which limited overall growth.
Consumer Behavior and Discounts
Marketers observed that the high discounts offered this year significantly drove sales. Social commentator Santosh Desai noted that Indian consumers are attracted to discounts, and the deep discounts during Black Friday incentivized purchases from those who had been delaying them.
Performance Across Retail Chains
Vijay Sales, a leading electronics retail chain, recorded 75-80% of its typical business during significant shopping days. Discounts on smartphones, televisions, and appliances contributed to brisk sales. Marketing efforts also had a positive impact, with expectations that Black Friday could rival sales figures from Republic Day and Independence Day within the next couple of years.
Increased Foot Traffic
Foot traffic in malls surged as top brands like H&M, Levi’s, Samsung, and Adidas offered substantial discounts. According to Pushpa Bector, senior executive director at DLF Retail, footfall and sales increased by 30-40% compared to last year.
Online vs Physical Sales
An executive from a prominent apparel brand noted that discounts of up to 70% on platforms like Amazon and Myntra led to higher online sales compared to physical stores, even affecting luxury brands.
A Growing Tradition in India
This year's Black Friday sales saw increased participation from various brands, extending the sales period through the weekend and even into Monday. While traditionally a Western phenomenon, marketers in India are working to establish it as a significant sales period following Diwali, which typically sees a lull in sales.
Inventory Clearance Strategy
Most brands matched their Black Friday discounts to those of Independence Day and Republic Day to clear unsold inventory from the festive season. Despite an average festive season, with urban demand slowing, premium products like cars and smartphones saw strong double-digit growth, while mass-market products lagged behind.
