Tim Bourdon: The Marketing Visionary Who Redefined Fan Engagement

Remembering Tim Bourdon
Frisco, Texas — North Dakota State has arrived in Frisco for their 11th Division I era championship, gathering fans and supporters at the Omni Frisco Hotel, adjacent to the Dallas Cowboys headquarters. The weather was a pleasant change from Fargo, with a light wind and temperatures in the high 50s.
Tim Bourdon, who passed away at 75 after battling Parkinson’s disease, was a significant figure in this community. Known for his exaggerated crowd estimates, Tim was affectionately dubbed The Original Fan Engagement Director. His marketing genius was evident long before the term became mainstream. He knew how to create a Fear of Missing Out (FOMO) around Bison football, making it the must-see event in town.
A Legacy of Engagement
Tim’s influence extended beyond football. He served as the first general manager for the Fargo-Moorhead Fever and was actively involved in community initiatives, including the Fargo Squirt International youth hockey tournament. He was a proud NDSU graduate, a Bison swimmer, and an advocate for youth sports.
Innovator of Ideas
Tim constantly sought the next big thing. He filled the Bison Sports Arena with concerts and events, believing that Fargo could host significant happenings. His creativity also extended to the game day experience; he initiated the tradition of getting fans on their feet for kickoffs, a practice that continues today.
As NDSU prepares for their upcoming game against Montana State, a prayer service for Tim is scheduled at Nativity Church in Fargo, followed by his funeral, where his legacy will be honored. Tim’s spirit and vision will be remembered fondly by all who knew him.
