The End of Mass St. Collective: KU's Bold Move to In-House Marketing with FLIGHT

A New Era for College Athletes

With a transformative shift in compensation for college athletes on the horizon, the Mass St. Collective has officially ceased operations, as confirmed by Executive Director Keon Stowers. This collective has played a pivotal role in facilitating payments to University of Kansas athletes for name, image, and likeness (NIL) considerations.

Transition to Direct Payments

With the approval of the pending House v. NCAA settlement, set to take effect in the 2025-26 academic year, KU, along with other universities, will now be able to pay their athletes directly. This marks a significant change in the landscape of college sports.

In July, Travis Goff, KU's athletic director, hinted that while collectives may still have relevance post-revenue sharing, the university was leaning towards an in-house “agency approach.” This culminated in the announcement of FLIGHT, a partnership with Walz Tetrick, a marketing agency, and Learfield, aimed at connecting Jayhawks with commercial endorsement opportunities.

The Role of FLIGHT

The launch of FLIGHT effectively ended the operations of Mass St. Collective. Goff expressed gratitude for the collective’s contributions, stating, “It is imperative that we continue to adapt with the ever-evolving landscape of college athletics.” FLIGHT aims to provide a competitive edge by leveraging Walz Tetrick’s expertise in securing corporate endorsements, a task that collectives are not traditionally designed for.

Strategic Planning

As KU prepares for this new NIL environment, they aim to build brand awareness and initiate conversations with corporate partners ahead of the July 1 implementation date. Jason Booker, KU's Deputy Athletics Director, emphasized the importance of starting early to develop a robust program that enhances the personal brands of athletes in a competitive landscape.

The Future of Donor Support

Supporters of Mass St. Collective are encouraged to contribute to KU Athletics Development for scholarships for student-athletes moving forward. This marks the end of over three years of NIL efforts at KU, which began when NCAA athletes were first allowed to profit from their NIL in 2021.

The Mass St. Collective’s legacy includes partnerships with entities like 6th Man Strategies and 12th Man Strategies, and it evolved into the Mass St. Collective under the leadership of figures like Matt Baty and Dan Beckler. The collective's activities included sponsoring a team of former KU men’s basketball players for The Basketball Tournament.

As the university transitions to FLIGHT, the future looks promising for KU athletes in navigating this new era of NIL opportunities.
