MUMBAI: As millions prepare for the Maha Kumbh Mela at Prayagraj, brands are ramping up their advertising efforts to capture consumer attention. With an estimated 40 crore visitors expected at this once-in-12-years event, companies view this as a crucial opportunity to showcase their products, especially in a time of sluggish consumption among the Indian middle class.
Brands, including FMCG companies, banks, and startups, are planning extensive promotional activities. According to business strategy expert Harish Bijoor, brands are projected to spend around Rs 3,600 crore on marketing, with 25% dedicated to outdoor advertising. This event serves as a platform for moment marketing, allowing brands to enhance visibility and showcase innovations.
Test Marketing Opportunities: Events like Maha Kumbh enable brands to conduct test marketing, gaining valuable consumer feedback for new products. Sandeep Goyal, chairman at Rediffusion, emphasizes that such gatherings provide a unique environment to gauge market reactions.
Major Players in the Game: Leading FMCG firms such as Dabur, Reliance Consumer Products, PepsiCo, Coca-Cola, and ITC are heavily investing in this event to boost brand visibility amid a broader industry sales slowdown. Companies are setting up product booths, large hoardings, and even partnering with local eateries to enhance consumer sampling.
- Dabur is creating branded changing rooms and baby care facilities at the ghats, while Reliance promotes its beverage brand Campa with a dedicated resting zone called Campa Ashram.
- ITC plans to serve regional foods paired with its Bingo! snacks, and Coca-Cola aims to combine its beverages with local flavors for immersive experiences. PepsiCo has introduced mobile charging stations at the event.
Banking on the Opportunity: Bank of Baroda is leveraging the Kumbh Mela to promote its new UPI payment app Bob Epay. This strategic marketing approach highlights how brands are eager to engage with consumers directly at significant events like the Maha Kumbh.
