How a Failed Distribution Deal Left Goldove Entertainment $4 Million in the Red

Goldove Entertainment's Loss After 'Lumina'
Goldove Entertainment has filed a lawsuit claiming they lost $4 million in marketing costs due to their distribution partner, Wild About Movies, failing to deliver on their promises for the sci-fi thriller 'Lumina'. After the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted their rollout, Goldove decided to manage the filmâs distribution themselves instead of hiring a sales agent.
Marketing Plans and Costs The company invested significantly in the film's launch, creating life-sized standees, running a sweepstakes with prizes amounting to tens of thousands of dollars, and hiring a distribution company. They anticipated making at least $20 million during the opening week.
The Lawsuit Filed in Los Angeles Superior Court, the lawsuit accuses Wild About Movies of fraud and breach of contract. Goldove claims the company misrepresented the number of theaters that would show 'Lumina', leading to its poor box office performance. They are seeking damages equivalent to their marketing expenses.
Wild About Movies Responds In response, Wild About Moviesâ CEO, Timothy Nasson, denied the allegations and stated he plans to countersue for fraud, harassment, and libel, claiming that the film only grossed $23,000 on 200 screens in its first week.
Film Details 'Lumina' revolves around an alien abduction and features a cameo by Eric Roberts. It was produced by Goldove, whose leadership includes director and screenwriter Gino McKoy. The film's marketing strategy included extensive social media ads, billboards, and promotional events, including a $50,000 sweepstakes.
Distribution Issues According to the lawsuit, Goldove was led to believe that 'Lumina' would be shown on at least 1,500 screens, but the actual number was far lower, resulting in limited showtimes and locations. This failure forced Goldove to scramble for alternative distribution options, exacerbating their losses.
Nasson countered that every suggestion from industry experts was dismissed, contributing to the film's lack of success.
