Bumble's CMO Selby Drummond Steps Down: What This Means for the Dating App

Bumble's chief marketing officer (CMO), Selby Drummond, is set to leave the dating app after four impactful years. Confirmed to exit in January, Drummond will explore new opportunities. She initially joined Bumble in 2020 as chief brand officer and transitioned to CMO in July 2024. Her previous experience includes roles at Snap and Vogue, covering partnerships, marketing, and editorial work.
CEO Lidiane Jones praised Drummondâs contributions, stating, "Selby has been an outstanding steward of Bumbleâs iconic brand over the last four years." Under her leadership, Bumble established itself as a women-focused alternative in the competitive online dating market. In April 2024, she led the brand refresh campaign titled âWeâve Changed So You Donât Have To,â targeting users weary of app-based dating.
However, Bumble faced backlash in May due to a controversial billboard featuring a message perceived as insensitive, leading to a swift apology and removal of the ads. The brand is navigating challenges from competing apps like Tinder and Hinge, alongside rising fees and a shift back to in-person interactions. Bumble's growth has raised investor concerns, particularly after it revised its annual revenue growth forecast to 1-2%.
In light of Drummondâs departure, Bumble appointed Neil Shah, former COO of Slack, as the new chief business officer. Shah will focus on strategic transformation and revenue models. Additionally, Anu Subramanian, Bumbleâs CFO, announced her resignation but will stay until March 2025. These leadership changes come as Bumble aims to strengthen its position in the dating app landscape.
