Are Marketers Missing the Mark? Discover Why 44% of Consumers Feel Ignored!

44% of American consumers feel âignoredâ by advertisers according to recent data from iHeartMedia and Pushkin Industries. This statistic reveals a significant disconnect between marketers and their audience, particularly among White suburban consumers earning over $100,000 a year. Gayle Troberman, CMO of iHeartMedia, emphasizes that these consumers span urban, suburban, and rural areas, suggesting that brands are failing to connect with their values and priorities.
The Ignored Consumer Paradox
The âignored consumerâ demographic is predominantly White, making up 63% of this group, followed by Hispanic (17%), Black (15%), and Asian (6%). In contrast, 58% of consumers who donât feel ignored are White, with 22% identifying as Black.
Geographically, 40% of ignored consumers reside in suburban areas, 32% in urban settings, and 27% in rural locales. Interestingly, 75% of these ignored consumers prefer shopping at brands that reflect their values, and 72% express a desire to avoid brands that overlook them.
Troberman points out that while many marketers focus on younger audiences, there is a significant opportunity to engage with broader audiences. She advocates for incorporating affordable mass reach media to connect with these overlooked consumers.
From Me to You
Despite efforts in targeting and personalization, 68% of consumers dislike targeted ads and are twice as likely to resent AI-driven personalization. Nonetheless, $9.5 billion is anticipated to be invested in personalization this year, highlighting a stark contradiction between consumer preferences and marketing strategies.
The values gap is also notable, with consumers prioritizing religion and law and order significantly more than marketers do. Troberman notes, âWhile everyone cares about family, safety, and health, the average consumer cares much more about law and order, religion, and freedom of speech.â This disconnect may contribute to the perception that their values are not adequately represented in marketing efforts.
