Australia’s Media Industry Demands Payment from Tech Giants
Australia’s biggest media companies have named the tech giants they believe should be forced to pay hundreds of millions of dollars for news or face a steep levy on their revenue: Google, Meta, TikTok, Microsoft, and Apple.
These five companies own major search engines or social media platforms and should be made to compensate publishers for the news that ends up on their sites, according to industry group Free TV, which represents Australia’s free-to-air broadcasters.
A group representing three of Australia’s biggest media companies has called for urgent new laws to force global platforms to pay for news.
