Position: Senior SEO StrategistCompensation: $50–$55/hr

Employment Type: 1099 Contractor (20–25 hours/week)

About the Role

Knapsack Creative is looking for a US-based Senior SEO/GEO Strategist who can think like a business advisor, operate like a strategist, and communicate like a trusted partner to founders.

In this role, you’ll become the primary SEO voice inside our agency, leading strategy, owning client relationships, and guiding small business owners through the decisions that drive real, measurable growth. You’ll work directly with entrepreneurs and professional service providers across a wide range of industries. Your job is to dig in and understand their business, diagnose what’s holding them back, and build a clear plan that helps them rank, convert, and scale.

You’ll step into a role previously held by the founder, taking full ownership of SEO/GEO strategy, reporting, and client communication. That means you’ll run onboarding calls, lead quarterly strategy sessions, and build personalized monthly reports. You’ll translate complex SEO concepts into language business owners can understand, anticipate their questions, and guide them with warmth, expertise, and precision.

This is a senior-level role for someone who’s obsessive about details, fanatical about accuracy, and energized by building exceptional client experiences. You’ll oversee our internal SEO resources, ensure our deliverables are polished and strategic, and refine our Asana boards and workflows to keep engagements running at a high level. You won’t be alone; we have strong technicians and designers on the team, but you will be responsible for setting the direction and owning the outcome.

ResponsibilitiesClient Strategy & Advisory (40%)

  • Serve as the primary SEO Strategist for all assigned clients, acting as the expert advisor and relationship owner.
  • Lead SEO onboarding calls and quarterly strategy sessions, and deliver custom monthly reports for each client. Conduct ad hoc meetings as needed to build rapport, educate clients, and communicate clear expectations throughout the engagement.
  • Diagnose growth challenges, uncover constraints, and craft SEO/GEO strategies aligned with each client’s business model, target market, and goals.
  • Translate complex SEO/GEO concepts into clear, practical insights that small business owners can understand and act on.

SEO Strategy Development (20%)

  • Develop comprehensive SEO/GEO roadmaps for both local and national businesses across industries.
  • Build keyword strategies, content frameworks, technical priorities, and internal linking plans that move rankings and increase conversions.
  • Stay ahead of industry and AI-driven trends, ensuring our clients benefit from the most current thinking and best practices.

Quality Control, Review & Oversight (20%)

  • Oversee deliverables produced by our SEO technicians, writers, and designers, ensuring accuracy, precision, and strategic alignment.
  • Review content briefs, audits, metadata, blog drafts, landing pages, and optimization tasks before they reach the client.
  • Ensure every deliverable is polished, client-ready, and in line with Knapsack’s standards.

Project Management (10%)

  • Maintain and groom Asana boards, ensuring SEO tasks are properly scoped, sequenced, and completed on time.
  • Create and assign tasks that arise from client calls, audits, or strategy changes.
  • Collaborate with designers, builders, and support resources to ensure seamless execution of SEO work.

Reporting & Analytics (10%)

  • Build monthly SEO reports, interpret data, and highlight key wins, insights, and opportunities.

QualificationsRequired

  • 7+ years leading SEO strategy inside an agency or as an independent consultant, with direct ownership of client relationships, delivery oversight, and growth outcomes across multiple industries.
  • Proven track record managing client relationships, particularly with founders, entrepreneurs, and service-based businesses.
  • Deep expertise in technical SEO, on-page SEO, keyword strategy, local SEO, GEO, and content strategy.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to simplify complex topics and speak confidently to non-technical audiences.
  • Experience managing multiple client accounts simultaneously in a fast-moving environment.
  • Proficiency with common SEO tools: GA4, Search Console, SEMrush/Ahrefs, Screaming Frog, BrightLocal, etc.
  • High comfort with Asana or similar project management platforms.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and an almost obsessive commitment to precision.
  • High EQ and the ability to build trust quickly and maintain long-term relationships.
  • Comfort working in a small, collaborative team where everyone wears multiple hats.

Preferred

  • Experience working with compliance-heavy industries (financial services, CPA firms, etc.).
  • Experience with both local SEO and national SEO programs.
  • Background as an entrepreneur, freelancer, or consultant.
  • Experience in hospitality, client service, or other relationship-based roles.
  • Strong understanding of AI’s impact on search and modern SEO best practices.
