We serve Collinsville, Maryville, Caseyville, and Fairmont City, Granite City, Pontoon Beach, Madison, Venice and Mitchell with dedicated coverage of local government, schools, sports, and community nonprofits via the Collinsville Daily News and Granite City Daily News.

About the Role:

We are seeking a part time Editorial Assistant to join our small but mighty team. This remote position is ideal for someone who is seeking an opportunity to work remotely and contribute to vital community journalism. The Editorial Assistant will play a key role in content curation, social media management, and other marketing efforts to support our growing readership of 65,000-70,000 readers.

This role is designed for a solution-oriented self starter who is comfortable working independently. The ideal candidate will be able to balance this independent approach to work with the ability to ask questions and seek support when faced with unfamiliar situations or circumstances.

What You Will Do:Social Media & Audience Growth

• Manage and grow social media presence across existing social media platforms: Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and X.
• Create engaging social media content to drive traffic to the website.
• Monitor social media engagement and respond to community interactions.
• Assist with the development of high impact strategies to expand our digital footprint and reach new audiences.

Content Management & Distribution

• Manage curation and posting of syndicated content from Capitol News Illinois.
• Maintain a consistent publishing schedule across all digital platforms.
• Ensure proper formatting and presentation of all content

Advertising & Business Development Support

• Assist with advertising layout and design.
• Conduct outreach calls to local businesses when needed.
• Assist with maintenance of business directory and sponsorship relationships.

Administrative & Coordination

• Monitor and respond to company emails.
• Create and maintain a schedule for coverage of major municipal government meetings.
• Assist Publisher with coordination of coverage assignments for reporters and photographers.
• Support administration’s need to maintain smooth operations of both CDN and GCDN.

Your Skills:

• Proficient in all social media platforms with proven ability to grow an audience.
• Strong skills in Canva and/or Adobe for design work.
• Fluent in written and spoken English
• Experience with content management systems and digital publishing
• Self-directed worker who can operate independently with minimal supervision
• Entrepreneurial mindset with ability to generate creative ideas
• "People person" comfortable making phone calls and conducting business outreach
• Strong organizational skills to manage multiple tasks and deadlines

This is a part-time, remote position working directly with the Owner/Publisher. Malench Publishing operates as a lean, agile newsroom where team members wear multiple hats and contribute across various functions. A successful candidate will have significant autonomy and play an integral role in the continued growth of the company.

Compensation is $15-$20/hour depending on experience. The schedule is flexible but requires some availability during agreed upon business hours for certain responsibilities. This is a great opportunity for a journalism student looking for hands-on experience who is available at least 15 hours a week.
