The established and well-respected film industry title is recruiting a new member of the editorial team to help continue to evolve our digital offerings across multiple platforms. The role will primarily focus on online and social media, but there is scope for development and opportunities to write for the print magazine.
Job Description
Job title: Digital and social media coordinator/journalist
Reporting to: Editor-in-Chief, Zoe Mutter
Position: Full-time, UK-based, remote working
Working hours: 9am – 5.30pm, but with some extended hours. Will involve travel to events.
Salary: Dependant on experience
Duties and Responsibilities
The successful applicant will be joining at an exciting time for British Cinematographer as the team explores new avenues in print, digital and social media. As digital and social media coordinator/journalist, you will be responsible for sourcing and posting news on the website, generating new and original content ideas, sub-editing press releases for online use, and posting content from the print magazine on the site. You will also handle British Cinematographer’s social networking presence (across our Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn accounts), posting about our own content, interacting with others and building up British Cinematographer’s following. You will also manage our CinePlayer video-on-demand platform and get involved in exciting events projects we have recently launched.
Knowledge of the film industry is preferable but not essential. A passion and enthusiasm for film and TV is a definite advantage. You will have the ability to adapt quickly to the subject matter when posting daily news on the site.
Knowledge of content management systems, social media management and video content systems is essential. A working knowledge of Photoshop would also be favourable, although not essential (for resizing images for the web). Video editing experience would also be desirable.
You will be encouraged to utilise your writing skills and contribute to interviews and features in the print magazine and website, carrying out online interviews with filmmakers. You would also be responsible for curating news posted on the site for news bulletins and working with the team members responsible for creating and sending those.
When the publication is working towards print deadlines, you might be called on to assist with subbing.
The Ideal Candidate
The successful candidate will be hard working, self-motivated and willing to work flexibly to maintain the high standards established at the title. They should be dedicated to a career in journalism (with a particular focus on digital and social media), organised, punctual, enthusiastic about the subject matter, and excited at the prospect of helping evolve the magazine and website.
Applicants should be confident to work independently, suggest innovative ideas, and have a strong desire to work in and learn about the fast-paced and fascinating film industry.
This role would suit a young professional with a background in creating engaging content.

Summary of main responsibilitiesNews articles
- Populate the WordPress site daily with relevant news content, on average about 5 articles per day.
- Liaise with PRs and relevant bodies to source imagery to support the articles.
- Label the content with relevant tags, adjusting the copy to suit house style and increase SEO friendliness.
Content from the issue/supplements
- Upload and optimise content from the print issues so it can be read online, gating content when relevant.
- Schedule the content so it aligns with timely events, similarly with when the content is pushed on socials.
Editorial
- On occasion, be expected to conduct interviews with cinematographers and other relevant industry figures.
- Attend exciting international events in the film industry as a representative of the BC brand.
Social media
- Manage the social media channels of British Cinematographer, primarily Instagram, but also Facebook, LinkedIn, TikTok, X (formerly Twitter), and Threads.
- Manage the schedule of when to post content from the issue, as well as paid for content, posts from partners and UGC.
- Optimise all content to ensure it is algorithm-friendly.
- Collaborate with industry-leading brands and cinematographers to increase social reach.
- Proficiency in Photoshop to create original graphics for social media and other BC outputs.
- Manage the company’s Linktree account.
- On occasion, lead competition campaigns through social media.
- Report monthly via Google Analytics and social platforms.
Newsletters
- Liaise with in-house marketing specialist to provide copy and imagery for weekly Mailchimp newsletter.
- Ensure dedicated e-shots from companies are sent out on time and with correct imagery and content.
- Curate a monthly LinkedIn newsletter which highlights the best content from the previous month.
CinePlayer
- Upload relevant content to British Cinematographer’s dedicated video-on-demand channel on a regular basis (2-3 videos a week).
Video editing
- Optimise casually filmed interviews to appear on BC’s social media channels.
- Occasionally edit professional footage from BC events to appear on CinePlayer and social media channels.
- Proficiency in Adobe Suite, primary Rush for video content. Experience in Premiere Pro is a plus.
