The Shocking Truth About Black Friday Sales: Are You Really Saving?

Consumer Alert! When shopping for big purchases, many people wait for sales events like Black Friday to snag a deal. However, one shopper, Anna Hall, was taken aback to find an oven at Smith City listed at a higher price during the sale than before. Initially priced at $2399, it was now marked up to $2719.20, with a supposed retail price of over $3000.

Hall expressed her disbelief, stating, "I was pretty horrified to see they'd put the price up for Black Friday, which seemed bizarre."

Smith City clarified that the previous promotion had ended and the listed price was correct. According to Consumer NZ spokesperson Abby Damen, this practice isn't uncommon and can mislead consumers, especially during the festive rush when finances are tight.

Damen emphasized that specials must offer genuine savings and be time-limited. Bodo Lang, a marketing expert, predicted an increase in sales this year due to challenging retail conditions. He noted that if retailers struggle to sell stock outside of sale periods, they may push for more aggressive sales during events like Black Friday and Boxing Day.

Lang pointed out that while some consumers may wait for sales, others might need to purchase essential items immediately, regardless of discounts. On the other hand, items that are more desired than needed may see increased purchases due to sales promotions.

Gavin Male, CEO of PriceSpy, advised consumers to ask retailers for price matching if they find cheaper prices elsewhere. Hall's experience serves as an important reminder for shoppers to verify if discounts are genuinely beneficial. She remarked, "It's one thing if it's the same price but to actually make it significantly, like $300 more on the supposed Black Friday sale seems really wrong."
