Experian's Bold Move: How Acquiring Audigent is Shaping the Future of Digital Curation

The curation buzz is no longer just talk â itâs shaping the market, especially in M&A. A prime example is Experian's acquisition of Audigent.
Experian announced the deal recently but withheld the price. However, an insider estimates the valuation to be between $200 million and $250 million, a figure supported by various sources familiar with Audigentâs operations. Experian has declined to comment on the financial specifics.
It's likely that no third-party bankers were involved in the deal, as Experian and Audigent have had a formal relationship since 2022. This prior collaboration may have allowed Experian's corporate team to bypass extensive board approvals for the acquisition, which has been in negotiation since early fall 2024.
As year-end approaches, many corporations face a âuse it, or lose itâ scenario, pushing them to close acquisitions swiftly. For Experian, the acquisition represents a strategic trifecta: enhanced data capabilities, improved identity solutions, and a prime position in the booming curation market. Audigent, a leader in this space, specializes in shifting targeting and margins from the buy-side to the supply-side of ad tech, positioning Experian at the forefront of reshaping ad economics.
âWe view Audigent as a natural extension of our existing marketing data and identity capabilities,â said a spokesperson from Experian. The addition of Audigentâs first-party publisher data and inventory network will empower Experian to enhance its identity activation technology.
As third-party cookies decline, marketers are seeking alternative signals, making Experian's new position even more significant. Terence Kawaja, CEO of LUMA Partners, highlighted that the term âcurationâ is often debated in the sector, noting that Experianâs acquisition could position it against competitors like The Trade Desk.
Kawaja remarked on the significance of Experian acquiring a player that packages media, similar to moves made by companies in the ad verification space. Audigentâs leadership has been seeking an exit for some time, and discussions of a sale began surfacing around September. The groundwork for this deal was laid in 2022 when the two companies started collaborating, integrating Experianâs identity and audience data into Audigentâs SmartPMP marketplaces.
âThe combination of Experianâs demand-side capabilities and Audigentâs sell-side distribution offers clients an end-to-end approach that empowers marketers to deliver targeted advertisements,â stated the Experian spokesperson.
Industry consultant Lulu Phongmany noted that this transaction is a natural progression of their existing relationship, suggesting that Audigent will not withdraw from its publisher partnerships. She emphasized that this acquisition allows Experian to acquire essential technology without having to build it from scratch.
This acquisition may signal the start of a trend, with curation poised to drive ad tech innovation and open new commercial opportunities in the upcoming year. Major players like Google, Coca-Cola, and GroupM are already focusing on curation, indicating that companies aligning with this trend will attract interest from strategic buyers and private equity investors.
More broadly, this deal reflects a growing momentum around ârationalizationâ deals aimed at consolidating or expanding into new markets. For now, Audigent will continue to operate as a standalone brand while Experian evaluates how best to integrate it into its broader ad tech ecosystem.
