BACKGROUNDAbout Time is Australia’s national prison newspaper. The paper amplifies the voices of incarcerated
people and provides a rare window into life behind bars.
We are seeking an Advertising & Partnerships Specialist to grow our advertising revenue, primarily through partnerships with law firms, various government and not-for-profit agencies, and other aligned organisations.
This is a fixed-term, part-time role, with the option to extend subject to performance.
About Time reaches tens of thousands of people in prisons across Australia each month, delivering news, education, information and creative expression that is otherwise inaccessible, while also offering a unique, trusted and effective platform for advertisers, particularly law firms working in criminal, family and personal injury law.
COMPENSATION
We have structured this role to balance stability with performance incentives:
- Base salary: $15,000–$20,000 plus superannuation for a full-time equivalent package (part-time pro-rated for ~3 days/week (flexible)
- Commission:8–10% of paid advertising revenue secured (commission paid as ads are paid by clients) — up to an additional ~$8,000–$10,000 over the contract based on performance
- Bonus: Opportunity for a bonus for exceeding agreed revenue targets (e.g., additional bonus in tiered structure to reward strong results)
We expect total earnings (base + commission + bonus) to reflect a 60% base / 40% performance balance, which is competitive with similar sales roles.
ABOUT THE ROLE
You will focus on generating new advertising and sponsorship revenue for About Time, especially from legal practices (criminal law, personal injury, family law, immigration law) and a broad range of organisations that see value in reaching our unique audience (government agencies, not-for-profits service providers, others).
WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING
- Identify, pitch and close advertising deals
- Build and nurture relationships with new and existing advertisers
- Think creatively about advertising, sponsorship and partnership opportunities
- Work with the editorial/production team to shape ad offerings
ABOUT YOU
We seek someone who:
- Has strong relationship and sales experience — media, B2B, niche publications, sponsorships or similar
- Thinks creatively about revenue opportunities and packages
- Is confident, proactive and results-orientated
- Can work independently and flexibly
- Is passionate about the space in which we work.
Experience in legal advertising is a plus, but broad sales experience and the ability to think laterally across sectors is just as valuable.
